Abstract Paper Portraits

Here is a great twist on the Paper Self-Portraits I do with my third graders (full instructions here). Instead of using realistic colors, I encourage the kids to mix it up. It's hard for some kids to chose pink or green for a face color but once they get going, there is no stopping the creativity that follows!
I put out a container of buttons, but don't give any specific instructions for their use. I love seeing what they come up with.

Loving your projects! I have stolen so much from you, it should include some sort of jail time.

PS Have you tried the tangle doodles yet? What fun to have my doodling validated as an artform.

Julie,
I'm glad you use them, after all, that's why I do the blog! Haven't tried the doodles yet, but plan to soon.

I just found your site through Sara Mincy.
I used to teach elementary art, wish I had your blog then! Now I am a working artist/author from home.
I love your blog. It is great!!:)

Patty!!

I just did this lesson with my class. It did take us 3 days to finish them and I probably should have waited to a little later in the year, but I loved how yours looked and I am impatient. They turned out so great!!! One of my kids misunderstood about the tracing and glued the template she made onto the colored paper. But I actually wish they had all done that. I then had her just cut around the template glued paper and she turned it over and had a perfect portrait. No tracing frustration (though they were great and really patient). I love when things like that happen. The kids loved them and of course I had to beg them to keep them in the classroom. :-) Thanks again!

I'm so glad it worked! It can be complicated (the whole tracing part) but I haven't figured out how to do it easier.
Hope your foot is better!

I've been looking for a project for the first day of school that involves portraits. I think this is it. I'll post pictures once the kids have completed them.
I really love this site.
