Ahoy Matey! Sailboat Painting Lesson for Second Grade

The kids at Foothill School painted sailboats in art class this week. We talked a bit about the basic parts of a boat and worked hard to create a boom big enough to paint. The sails were the most fun to decorate. A few kids added skulls and cross bones...I mean, what pirate boat would be complete without that? But some kids added hearts, flowers, polka dots and traditional stripes to round out their colorful sails.
The kids used a color palette of red, blue and yellow. They painted one section of their drawings at at time, mixing orange, purple and green as needed.
After the paint dried, the kids outlined their original pencil lines with a black marker.

Well, what do you think? I love hearing how you adapted the art projects. Did it work? Any pitfalls? Or, if you'd like, just share your thoughts.
